What you’ll need [Video :16]

See the Materials List on your right for links.

Material and Hooping [Video :47]

Hooping is very simple. The patch twill requires no topping or backing and the Allied Hoops are simple to use.

Loading the Design [Video 1:25]

In this case we’re loading from a thumb drive, but you can also use direct connect or wireless.

Once you pull your design up on the control panel, use the #3 button along the top of the display to access the color change menu. Set the thread colors according to your design.

Move through the steps to choose your hoop and center the design and then sew.

(please refer to training course if you don’t understand these steps.)

Applying Heat Seal [Video 2:52]

Cut a piece of heat seal so it covers the back of the patch, but is smaller than the piece of twill. You do not want the heat seal to bleed over the edges.

On your heat press, put the patch and heat seal between 2 sheets of finishing paper – or make the patch sandwich described in the video.

Heat press at 350 degrees, medium pressure for approximately :10, let it cool slightly and lift up the edge to make sure it adhered. If so, then you’re ready to cut with the heat knife.

Cutting out Patch [Video 3:35]

Time to cut out the patch! Use your hot knife at a 45 degree angle, smooth movement and consistent pressure to cut the twill. We’re using polyester thread and twill, so the edges will melt together.

Clean around the design with the barrel of the hot knife. Best if you watch the video for this!

Applying Patch to Vest [Video 4:35]

Because we are working with a zippered vest, it’s important to raise the heat-pressed area up. That way the plastic zipper isn’t damaged. Use a perfect print pad or piece of platen cover for this.

Cover with a finishing sheet. Normally you would then heat press on medium pressure for :15 seconds at 350 degrees, but we lowered the temp to 300 degrees because we were afraid we’d damage the poly material of the vest otherwise.

Pro Tip:

Hannah

Test you fabric for heat and pressure! You can always press twice if the patch doesn’t adhere, but you can’t fix a melted or scorched garment.

If you are doing a bunch of patches you can copy and paste the image in the software, or use the repeat function on the machine, and hoop your patch material in your largest hoop. That way you can sew as many at once as you can fit in your hoop. It’s a big time saver!
